What is mold?

Molds are fungi that thrive both indoors and outdoors. While the exact number of species is unknown, estimates suggest there may be tens of thousands to over three hundred thousand. Mold flourishes in warm, damp, and humid environments, spreading and reproducing through spores. These spores are resilient and can survive in harsh conditions, even in environments too dry for mold to grow normally.
How to identify mold in your house?

Mold and mildew require two main ingredients to grow: oxygen and moisture. Given that these conditions are common in most environments, it’s no surprise that mold can develop in many places. Mold spores are present in the air and attach to moisture. If moisture persists, mold will begin to grow.

In homes and offices, mold commonly grows in kitchens and bathrooms, where even a small drip can create an ideal environment. Leaks or condensation in HVAC systems or on ductwork can also lead to mold issues, as well as any moisture that seeps into walls, ceilings, or under floors.

While we are exposed to mold and mildew almost daily, small amounts typically don’t pose a problem. However, mold can affect people differently. Children, the elderly, asthma sufferers, and those with allergies are more likely to experience reactions to mold, often manifesting as respiratory issues that resemble flu-like symptoms.
What is black mold?

According to the CDC, Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as Stachybotrys atra) is a greenish-black mold that thrives on materials with high cellulose and low nitrogen content, such as fiberboard, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint.

This mold grows in conditions where moisture is present, such as water damage, excessive humidity, leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding. Constant moisture is essential for its growth. However, identifying the specific type of mold is not necessary. All molds should be treated with the same level of caution concerning potential health risks and removal.
Where is mold found?

Mold is present in nearly every environment and can be detected both indoors and outdoors throughout the year. It thrives in warm and humid conditions. Outdoors, mold is often found in shady, damp areas or where leaves and other vegetation are decomposing. Indoors, mold commonly grows in places with high humidity, such as basements or showers.
How can we decrease mold growth?
Sensitive individuals should avoid areas where mold is likely to be present, such as compost piles, freshly cut grass, and wooded areas. Inside the home, mold growth can be minimized by controlling humidity levels and ensuring proper ventilation in showers and cooking areas.

Specific Recommendations:

Keep humidity levels as low as possible, ideally no higher than 50% throughout the day. An air conditioner or dehumidifier can help maintain low humidity, but remember that levels may fluctuate with changes in moisture and air temperature.

Use a dehumidifier in enclosed spaces like basements.

Ensure your home has adequate ventilation, including the use of exhaust fans.

Add mold inhibitors to paints before applying them.

Clean bathrooms regularly with mold- or mildew-killing products.

Avoid carpeting bathrooms and basements.

Remove or replace carpets and upholstery that have been soaked previously.
